Rebranding Legalstart

Guiding a high-impact visual evolution, ensuring consistency across complex, multi-stack product platforms.

Context & challenge
Founded in 2014, Legalstart scaled as a first-mover in a Blue Ocean, where functional utility initially took precedence over brand identity. A decade later, the landscape had shifted into a Red Ocean with aggressive competitors creating significant brand confusion.
To mark our 10th anniversary, I partnered with the Marketing team to lead a strategic rebranding. As Head of Design, I identified a critical need for operational scalability: Legalstart had no design system. This rebranding was the greenfield opportunity to build one from scratch, designed to not only unify the new identity but to drastically optimize team velocity and design consistency across all product platforms.
Role : Head of Design & Brand Lead
Duration : 12+ months (2-phased strategic rollout)
Team : 2 Product Designer, 1 CMS manager, 1 illustrator, Cross-functional Squads (CMS & Service)
Stack : Stacks: HubSpot (CMS), Custom React/Next.js (Funnels & Service)
Key results :  NPS increased from 4.1 to 4.4 and significant improvement in Brand Recall within 3 months of the final rollout.
Stakeholder management & Leadership
Executive Partnership : Orchestrated workshops with the CPMO to translate business goals into a visual DNA that solved competitor naming confusion.
• Agency Stewardship : Co-led the agency selection and acted as the primary bridge between external creative concepts and internal product constraints.
Cross-Squad Orchestration : Negotiated roadmaps with Product Managers and Front-end Engineers to integrate the new Design System without disrupting critical legal workflows or slowing down production.
Design Ops : Built the "Brand-to-Product" bridge, ensuring 100% brand integrity across different technical stacks and organizational silos.
The 2-phase strategy (The "How")
Phase 1 : Authority & Visibility (CMS)
 Timeline : 6 months (Launched August 27, 2024).
• Scope : 5,000+ legal guides, landing pages, and product offerings.
Action : Defined the core Design Tokens (Color, Fonts, Type, Illustration, Photography). I managed a team of 2 designers to rebrand the entire public-facing site, ensuring a premium feel and perfect responsiveness across all devices (Mobile, Tablet, Desktop).

Phase 2 : Performance & Service (The Core Product)
 Timeline : 3 months (following a 6-month strategic hiatus).
• Scope : High-conversion Acquisition Funnels and the "Service" App (Post-payment journey).
Action : Led a deep UX overhaul of the Pre-payment Funnels. This was a "Growth Design" sprint to merge the new identity with aggressive conversion optimization.
Collaboration : Partnered with the "Service" squad to migrate the complex legal document builder to the new Design System while maintaining 100% uptime for critical company creation and modification services.
The Design System: Building the Foundation
When I took over the rebranding, Legalstart had no centralized design system. I leveraged this transformation to build a comprehensive framework from the ground up, aimed at unifying our multi-stack ecosystem and drastically accelerating team velocity.

The Strategy : Auditing & anticipating
Existing Audit : Conducted a deep dive into our 10-year design debt to identify inconsistencies across the CMS, funnels, and core service.
Future-proofing : Anticipated the rebranding’s long-term needs to ensure the new system could support future product lines beyond the 10th-anniversary launch.

The Infrastructure : Rules & components
Component Governance : Defined strict usage rules for every atom and molecule to ensure a "Single Source of Truth."
Design Tokens : Implemented a robust token system to bridge the gap between Figma and our different technical stacks (HubSpot, React).

The Process : Design ops & quality control
Standardized workflows : Established new internal processes for the design team to optimize the use of the library and reduce time-to-market.
• Preventing "design drift" : Implemented guardrails and review cycles to prevent the creation of "temporary" or "rogue" components that bypassed our established brand principles.
• Outcome : Shifted the team culture from "pixel-pushing" to "system-thinking," ensuring that every new feature respects the brand’s integrity by default.
What I did (Key responsibilities)
Strategic direction : Owned the end-to-end vision of the rebranding across the entire Legalstart ecosystem.
• Phased rollout planning : Engineered the 2-step migration to manage technical debt and business priorities efficiently.
Design system : Oversaw the creation of a scalable UI Kit and Design Tokens to unify the brand across multiple platforms (CMS vs. Custom Apps).
• Growth optimization : Leveraged the rebranding to iterate on acquisition funnels, directly impacting user trust and conversion rates.
The rebranding successfully transitioned Legalstart from a "utility tool" to a "trusted legal partner."
Brand salience & Ad performance : Achieved instant visual differentiation in paid acquisition channels. Users now identify Legalstart much more easily in Ads, solving the confusion with look-alike competitors and improving top-of-funnel efficiency.
• Trust & Satisfaction : The seamless, premium experience in the "Service" app led to a +0.3 point jump in NPS (4.1 to 4.4) in record time.
Scalability : Delivered a future-proof Design System ready to support the next generation of Legaltech services with total consistency.
